Christmas display (round tube)

Making a Christmas decoration can be very satisfactory. It makes the celebration much more personal (and less expensive) and you can use materials from previous years in a way they look totally new.  Have also a look at Christmas Wreath for another inexpensive and easy way to make a Christmas decoration.

What you need:

  • Hoop(s) (2 dollar shop, comes in a small package and needs to be assembled) or rubber tube or hose (approx. 1.5 cm) for drainage or irrigation (25 m for $8.00 at Mitre Ten or Hammer pink-hoopHardware shop)
  • Coloured ribbon or paper
  • Tape
  • Christmas decorations (new or old ones from previous years)
  • Some green from trees (optional)

What to do:

Assemble the hoop to create a circle. If you use a rubber tube or hose: cut off the length needed.  Cut off another 10 cm and cut the little piece open with knife or scissors then push it over both ends of the first piece to make a circle. I used a  hoop from the 2 dollar shop and cut strips of used gold coloured wrapping paper 3 cm wide to cover the hoop.

Making these displays took me 2 hours detail-apples-and-green-branchWrap the paper or ribbon around the circle and tape or staple it to the tube. Tie a ribbon to the hoop so that it can hang from the ceiling or on the wall. For decoration you can use anything from Christmas balls to green branches with red berries from your garden. I used silver decoration with a white dove to decorate the golden circle. Another idea emerged when my partner showed me some green branches with lovely red berries in our garden. Igreen-branch-with-red-eggs attached it to the hoop and added some little apples for decoration. To keep it really cheap but with some more preparation you can use blow out eggs and paint them. vase-with-christmas-lights-and-gold-circleThe two dollar shop had also some fantastic large Christmas bags (indeed 2 dollars) and with some of my own decoration it gave a totally different Christmas image. The huge vase with dried branches and coloured Christmas lights made me long for The Netherlands and snow.red-circle-with-envelopes The second hoop I wrapped in red paper and used some silvery and gold coloured Christmas bags to adorn the hoop. As you can see: the list can go on forever. Whatever you hang into the hoop, it will look fantastic and a few hoops hanging from the ceiling with Christmas decorations in the same theme will make quite an impression. To display posters and cut images from magazines pasted on a sheet, he attached them to a tube. A fantastic way to give your posters just that other look.

  1. Love your website which I found by chance today while surfing the internet.

I am a secondary school librarian based in West London, England, looking for ideas to promote books and reading.

Have you done any Valentine’s Day, or Chinese New Year displays? I am desperate for ideas.

  2. Hi Gail,

How wonderful to hear that you like the website. I hope you will find ideas you can use. Tell all your colleges and put the website address on the English list server please. I love to provide you with some good ideas. The website also contains a Calendar of Events. Maybe some celebrations will be different in your part of the world but lots of them are international days.

I’ve done a display on Valentine’s once but it was before I had the website so no photos. Sorry. I had cut out a couple of pink paper hearts, ca 30 cm high and 25 cm wide. On them I had written expressions like: kiss kiss, cuty, hhmmnnn, sweetheart etc. Next to that I inflated a couple of pink balloons and attached them to the ceiling with the hearts dangling in between and a bit lower. You also could hang a couple of butterflies from the ceiling to represent the butterflies in our stomach when we’re in love. Under the balloons and hearts I seated a couch covered in pink fabric. Two tables next to the couch had packages with 4 or 5 novels (love stories) on them. A pink ribbon around the packages made it complete.

It was easy to create and especially the girl loved it. But even some boys took a seat on the couch laughing and joking.

It was a bit of a hassle to make the packages and the question was how to scan the books, but a pink fabric or plastic bag with a label or number should make it easier. By the end of the day most books were on loan.

I haven’t done anything with Chinese New Year, sorry. But chinese lanterns and bright red fabric will bring the right athmosphere, maybe additional christmas lights to give the red fabric a radiant glow?

Hope you can do something with it?

    Cheers,

    Anita
