World Famine Week
This is a very straight forward display and one of the first in my new job. A lot of pictures stapled to the board.
The yellow arrows are a cautious step to make it more eye catching but the whole display could use a more powerful design. The arrows direct the eye from one board to the other; wealth represented on the left and poverty on the right and the 40 hours famine in the middle.
Now, a half year later and more courageous, I would cut around the images and give it a much more expressive background. Maybe I would use just one large image to represent wealth and one for poverty because everyone knows the images of 3rd world countries as well as the Hollywood type mansions or excesses of food. Poverty is not only the lack of food and clean water but is connected with a lack of security, housing, education, a steady job, health care, a stable government etc.: lots of entrances to show what difference the World Famine Week can make.
Ideas I come up with now to emphasize the opposites Wealth and poverty are:
An old fashion weighing scale for instance hanging on rod with heaps of food on one side and hardly anything on the other
- A bottle with clean water and one with a greasy substance. It doesn’t need to be a real one, a huge one of card would make the same impression.
- A beautiful toy and a rag doll
-
Or a rusty piece of corrugated iron opposite a nicely painted piece of wood surrounding the panels or dividing the boards
- A dirty, stained rag of fabric opposite a nice blanket hanging over the panels
The back ground could be a muddy coloured sheet of torn paper printed with poverty all over the surface while the wealth part could be represented by a shiny, glossy paper with the word wealth all over it.
But I also could dedicate all three boards to poverty and create a kind of hut using cardboard where you can see through the door opening the lack of anything.
These ideas are just a few instant ideas I think of while typing the description for this display. I’m sure that after a serious brainstorm session I would come up with lots of other ideas.
